The Rīga Conference 2013
NATO’s sixth Secretary General Lord Carrington once said: “Security is the oxygen of prosperity.” Our mission is to ensure that this oxygen supply is kept running. And we will succeed!
For the eight time, Rīga became the setting for Northern Europe’s leading foreign and security policy forum, The Rīga Conference 2013. The event is organised jointly by the Latvian Transatlantic Organisation, the Latvian Ministry of Defence, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia and offers a unique venue for constructive dialogue on international security issues between leading global decision makers.
Recent developments within the realm of international security have reinforced the need for the international community to cope with unprecedented change. However, simply to define what is changing has been hard enough. To identify what to do in response has been even harder. But we no longer have the luxury of ambiguity or indecision, particularly in a time when politics, the economy and defence issues are ever more interrelated – when it affects one area it is only a matter of time before it reaches the other. Thus, building upon the constructive discussions from the previous year in a way to provide insightful analysis and proactive thinking is more important than ever before.
Hence, this year’s discussions focused on transatlantic defence, economic and security challenges faced by the EU and NATO, policy priorities of the Central Asian countries, the continuity and vitality of the Eastern Partnership, and partnership with Russia. From a global perspective, we considered the changing influence and evolving relations of the European Union and assess what can be done now and in the future to facilitate Euro-Atlantic dynamism and prosperity.
Creating the right environment to maintain and reinforce Trans-Atlantic prosperity through the use of shared values is the right way to redress the imbalance and thereby strengthen defence capabilities. And this is what The Rīga Conference 2013 was all about. 2 days, 6 discussion panels, 3 night owl sessions, several informal receptions are only a glimpse of what was delivered at this year’s Rīga Conference, an event for distinguished decision makers from across the world to seek sustainable solutions for emerging global issues.
